Bringing Important Stories to Life
One of the highlights of our year was our continued collaboration with Anna Freud, producing a powerful series of training films on. These sensitive topics require a delicate approach, and we ensured that real-life case studies and clinicians’ insights were authentically captured. By crafting narratives that spoke directly to professionals working in mental health, we aimed to make these films an essential tool for shaping the future of support for young people. This project reaffirmed our belief that film can not only inform but also change lives by increasing understanding and empathy.
We also had the privilege of working with The National Autistic Society on the Know Yourself series. This project provided free resources designed to help autistic teenagers understand themselves better and navigate their personal journeys. Filmed at our Nine Elms Studio, we created a comfortable and inclusive space for young people to feel at ease while being filmed. This production exemplified our commitment to creating content that resonates with its audience, ensuring that the final product is both meaningful and empowering. These partnerships continue to fuel our passion for creating impactful, socially responsible films.
Exploring Science, History, and Culture Through Film
At Chocolate Films, we thrive on making complex subjects accessible through engaging storytelling. One of the most exciting projects of 2024 was our work with The Francis Crick Institute on the Hello Brain! exhibition. This immersive exhibit delves into the wonders of neuroscience, and our two documentaries served as a gateway for audiences to explore topics like the mysteries of sleep and auditory hallucinations. By using film as a medium to simplify these intricate scientific concepts, we were able to engage viewers in a way that is both informative and captivating. These films sparked curiosity and encouraged people to think differently about the brain and its complexities.
Additionally, we worked on a historical storytelling project with The Dacorum Heritage Trust and Ashlyns School, bringing the story of the Ovaltine factory to life. This collaboration involved students from Ashlyns School who contributed to the animation by creating stop-motion sequences and voiceovers inspired by archival materials. This was a true co-production, where student creativity met professional filmmaking, resulting in a dynamic fusion of history and innovation. These collaborations showcase the power of film to educate, preserve history, and empower young people to contribute to their communities through creative expression.
Innovation in Production and Live Broadcasting
2024 was a year of technical challenges and innovations that pushed the boundaries of traditional filmmaking. One of our most ambitious projects was our collaboration with FLI Structures, where we captured the installation of a communications tower at Chirmorie Cairn, a remarkable 250 meters above sea level. This project required a combination of time-lapse cameras, drones, and aerial footage via helicopter, demonstrating our ability to adapt to extreme filming environments and leverage cutting-edge technology. The result was a visually stunning film that not only documented the process but also showcased the engineering behind the project. This was a perfect example of how we blend technical skill with storytelling to create awe-inspiring visuals.
Our collaboration with Waste Creative on a Clash Royale promo also stood out this year. This project blended the art of puppetry with set building to create a dynamic, engaging promo. The intricate goblin puppet and raised production space for puppeteers brought a sense of realism and wonder to the promo. Achieving this effect took immense precision, but the results spoke for themselves, with the video garnering over 5 million views on YouTube and trending at #2. This project emphasized our commitment to using practical effects and innovation to create content that resonates with audiences on a global scale.
Empowering Future Filmmakers
At Chocolate Films, we believe in the power of education and collaboration to foster the next generation of filmmakers. Our continued partnership with Into Film in 2024 was a testament to our dedication to nurturing young talent. We mentored students at West Herts College, guiding them through the process of creating Static, a short film about a supernatural encounter. This collaboration not only taught students about filmmaking techniques but also encouraged them to explore their own creative ideas and storytelling abilities. These hands-on experiences empower young people to develop their voices and contribute to the film industry in meaningful ways.
Our Saturday Studio programme also provided aspiring filmmakers with the opportunity to gain practical skills in filmmaking and animation. These workshops focused on teaching technical skills while also encouraging creativity and teamwork. Students not only gained confidence in their abilities but also learned to collaborate with others to bring their ideas to life. By offering these experiences, we continue to invest in the future of filmmaking, ensuring that young people have the tools they need to pursue their passions and make a difference through storytelling.
Documenting London’s Vibrancy: London Sport’s Legacy
One of our most rewarding projects was creating a campaign video for London Sport to celebrate its 10-year anniversary. London Sport has made physical activity accessible to all, and our video showcased their achievements and vision for the future. By working with real-life participants and actors, we told a compelling story that highlighted the impact London Sport has had on communities across the city. The project perfectly captured the essence of their mission to make physical activity available to everyone.
A Focus on Local Communities and Cultural Celebrations
In 2024, we also worked with New Covent Garden Market to produce a series of films celebrating the market’s 50-year legacy. The market is integral to the UK’s food and floral scenes, and our documentaries highlighted the people behind its success. Through interviews with longtime workers and a focus on the market’s community impact, we captured the passion and dedication that make New Covent Garden Market a London institution. This project also underscored our dedication to celebrating local heritage and achievements.
