We are excited to unveil the first film in a five-part series celebrating the remarkable collaboration between The Parker Library at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, and Stanford University Libraries. The Parker Library is internationally renowned for its extraordinary collection of medieval and Renaissance manuscripts, established in the late sixteenth century by Archbishop Matthew Parker. Chocolate Films was commissioned to create this series in honor of the 15th anniversary of Parker Library on the Web, a groundbreaking digital resource that has revolutionized global access to these priceless manuscripts.
Challenges of Filming Medieval Manuscripts
Filming rare manuscripts requires meticulous care and planning to preserve the integrity of these fragile artefacts. Working closely with the Parker Library team, we took the time to understand the specific challenges of filming within a space that houses centuries-old treasures.
Our priority was ensuring that our filming techniques did not compromise the manuscripts’ condition. Bearing in mind the delicate nature of the manuscripts, we had to ensure that our camera and lighting equipment would not cause any damage. By carefully positioning our setup and conducting thorough preparation beforehand, we captured exquisite close-ups of the manuscripts, revealing intricate details and craftsmanship.
Equally important was capturing interviews with experts whose knowledge and dedication have brought this pioneering project to life. Through these contributions, we explored the stories behind Parker Library on the Web, showcasing how it has shaped research and preservation efforts worldwide.
Telling the Story of Parker Library on the Web
Hearing from the project’s contributors was a highlight of the filming process. Their passion and expertise illuminated the incredible journey behind this digital resource, from its ambitious inception to its far-reaching impact on the global academic community.
The first film in the series takes viewers behind the scenes, celebrating how Parker Library on the Web has transformed accessibility to rare manuscripts. By digitizing and cataloging these works, scholars from around the world can now explore a treasure trove of historical insights without leaving their own libraries.
We invite you to watch the first film on the Parker Library’s YouTube channel here and delve into this fascinating project. Stay tuned for upcoming installments, where we’ll share more behind-the-scenes stories and insights from this collaborative effort.
