New Mother’s Writing Circle | Our Creative Voice

A look at the Scottish charity that uses creative writing and discussion to help the transition into motherhood

Celebrating Scotland's Creativity

Chocolate Films were delighted to be commissioned by Our Creative Voice to produce a series of films highlighting the crucial role of creativity in Scotland. We’ve been working with organisations across Scotland who inspire the public to get involved in creative activity. This partnership aims to build awareness of the impact that the arts and creativity have on all aspects of life in Scotland, in making people healthier, the economy stronger and communities more vibrant.

Using the arts to help new mothers

Chocolate Films were thrilled to make a short film exploring the work of The New Mothers’ Writing Circle. Founded by Catrin Kemp in 2020, this unique project centres the experience of mothers and their transformation in motherhood. The group nurtures creativity in cohorts of 10 – 15 mothers from diverse ethnic and social backgrounds, drawing on a range of narratives of motherhood, from Rachel Cusk to Toni Morrison, to empower women, build community and elevate voices. The workshops offer an inclusive space to focus on the mother and her experience, exploring the idea of matrescenes – the acknowledgement that every mother goes through a sudden, and yet incremental, metamorphosis across each aspect of her life. The brief for Chocolate Films was to delve into the rich experiences of these women and highlight how creative writing and discussions can be incredibly impactful for new mothers navigating a key, transitional stage in their lives.

Giving new mothers a voice

Central to the success of The New Mothers’ Writing Circle is its commitment to drawing on diverse narratives of motherhood and exploring individual experiences. For these reasons, Chocolate Films ensured that the filmmaking process was a deeply collaborative process. From the outset, the team worked closely with Our Creative Voice and The New Mothers’ Writing Circle to understand the group’s core values and how creativity plays a role in allowing mothers to express themselves. The team decided to tell the mothers’ stories through an intimate, documentary-style approach. This involved capturing candid scenes of the mothers in the group and interacting with each other and their children. Individual interviews gave them the opportunity to share their experiences and communicate how valuable the group is to them. The result is a poignant portrayal of the complexities, joys and struggles of motherhood. Crucially, it shows the importance of creativity in these womens’ journeys.

We commissioned Chocolate films to complete a BTS film as a promotional film for our Level 4 foundation course. We were out on location with our own 3 short films with our most senior students, and we needed an extra crew to capture all that was happening on set. They were thoughtful, efficient and proactive. Capturing some great interviews and BTS (thanks Elton!), weaving it into a great promotional film for us. Lucia steered the project beautifully from start to finish (thanks Nikita too). We’ve worked with Chocolate films before and would happily do so in the future. Chloe – London Screen Academy

I filmed a green screen production using sound and it came out great. Lucia and Nikka are lovely and happy to help, the facilities are exactly what I needed (there’s also a make-up room) and it was easy to get to.

The video content creation workshop offered by Chocolate Films was incredibly useful, packed full of handy tips on how to create compelling videos with the minimum equipment and time! The space is great and the team were welcoming, generous with their knowledge and clearly enthusiastic about what they do.
HUGE round of applause for the Chocolate Films team! We attended their ‘Using Video for Business’ Workshop, which they so kindly offered free of charge for local businesses in the Wandsworth area. Hosted at their lovely new Nine Elms studio space, we had a great morning of learning, chatting over tea and coffee. They are a really delightful and organised company that we hope to work with going forward, and we would love to see the team at one of our cookery classes one day! Ax

I joined other small business owners, founders and entrepreneurs for a morning workshop on how to create content, shoot and edit footage. The studio was so welcoming and the team gave some fantastic advice whether it was your first foray into film making or had been trying for a while but stuck with certain elements. The workshop was fun, enjoyable and informative with a good balance between information and hands on practice. They made something quite complex seem very accessable. The teams enthusiasm for their craft is infectious.

I work for the Anna Freud National Centre for Children and Families and we commissioned Chocolate films to make 3 films to support the training of mental health workers. The Chocolate films team have been highly professional, skilled and excellent to work alongside. Right from the beginning where we met to share our plans and discuss the potential project, the team have offered creative thinking, ideas and helped us to build a clear vision for the films. The script process felt easy and collaborative. The team have also provided a very clear structure and reliability around time scales. As the film making process began we worked closely around the development of scripts and casting of actors. Chocolate films have been very responsive and active in supporting us (at the Anna Freud centre) to work to the deadlines whilst showing a really high level of knowledge around the process and steps needed. The actual filming days were a pleasure to be involved with and the team has been very impressive to see in action, particularly in their ability to work together, to include me in their process whilst also attending very carefully to the details needed for the films to be high quality.I would highly recommend Chocolate films and would certainly commission them again
