Viral Puppet Promo | Clash Royale

We were asked to make a commercial to promote the new Goblin Queen Takeover event in Clash Royale. The catch? The star of the promo would be a puppet.

The goblins are taking over!

At Chocolate Films we usually create content from idea to completion, but not always. We love it when we get the opportunity to work with other agencies  – it’s always generates new approaches and ideas. We were commissioned by the super-talented team at Waste Creative to provide full production services (crew, kit, studio and more), for a high profile promo. The brief: to tease the goblin takeover in the video game Clash Royale. And this wasn’t just any promo – it featured a goblin puppet showing the different new features in the game.

It's not easy being green

The brief sounded very simple in principle – a goblin hand puppet delivering a piece to camera. However, sometimes it takes a lot of work to make something look effortless! One of our most important jobs was to make the shoot as easy as we could for the puppetry team. We were fortunate to work with great puppetry directors and a two puppeteers, one of whom was  also doing the voice acting.  To enable them to give their best performances, we needed to raise the set so that they could stand up with the puppet above their heads. This meant that we raised the set, crew, lights, cameras everything by about 4 feet to accommodate this. Nine Elms Studio, where the film was shot is a fantastic location with high enough ceilings to allow this to happen.

Pre-production makes perfect

This was an exciting shoot for us at Chocolate Films and seeing it all come together so efficiently and smoothly while still staying so creative was incredible. The feedback on the film has been great so far. Having over 4 million views from gamers on YouTube and hitting #2 trending was such a great cathartic ending to everyone’s hard work.

Making ideas come to life

This was a unique and exciting shoot but certainly not the first time we’ve filmed with puppets! From documenting the lives of Punch and Judy professors to working for the Mayor of London to look behind the scenes at the Lion King musical we’ve had many experiences! However, we can work with humans too. If you have a brief for a promo don’t hesitate to get in touch!

My children attended their film making workshops. What a great time they had! The crew members were fantastic, especially Bea, who has got excellent attitude towards children and tons of patience. I really recommend them, if you are looking for some quality workshops for your children.

I work at Cystic Fibrosis Trust and we are delighted with the animation Chocolate Films created for us. It met the brief and has helped us to explain our activities to current and future partners. Chocolate Films were a pleasure to work with and we appreciated their flexibility in working to a very tight timescale.

We commissioned Chocolate films to complete a BTS film as a promotional film for our Level 4 foundation course. We were out on location with our own 3 short films with our most senior students, and we needed an extra crew to capture all that was happening on set. They were thoughtful, efficient and proactive. Capturing some great interviews and BTS (thanks Elton!), weaving it into a great promotional film for us. Lucia steered the project beautifully from start to finish (thanks Nikita too). We’ve worked with Chocolate films before and would happily do so in the future. Chloe – London Screen Academy

I filmed a green screen production using sound and it came out great. Lucia and Nikka are lovely and happy to help, the facilities are exactly what I needed (there’s also a make-up room) and it was easy to get to.

The video content creation workshop offered by Chocolate Films was incredibly useful, packed full of handy tips on how to create compelling videos with the minimum equipment and time! The space is great and the team were welcoming, generous with their knowledge and clearly enthusiastic about what they do.
HUGE round of applause for the Chocolate Films team! We attended their ‘Using Video for Business’ Workshop, which they so kindly offered free of charge for local businesses in the Wandsworth area. Hosted at their lovely new Nine Elms studio space, we had a great morning of learning, chatting over tea and coffee. They are a really delightful and organised company that we hope to work with going forward, and we would love to see the team at one of our cookery classes one day! Ax

I joined other small business owners, founders and entrepreneurs for a morning workshop on how to create content, shoot and edit footage. The studio was so welcoming and the team gave some fantastic advice whether it was your first foray into film making or had been trying for a while but stuck with certain elements. The workshop was fun, enjoyable and informative with a good balance between information and hands on practice. They made something quite complex seem very accessable. The teams enthusiasm for their craft is infectious.
