Unlocking Creative Futures: Chocolate Films’ Mission to Inspire and Educate

The creative industries are a powerhouse in the UK economy, contributing £124bn in gross value added (GVA) in 2023. Yet, despite this thriving sector, many young people, especially those experiencing digital poverty, struggle to access creative career opportunities.

At Chocolate Films, we are committed to breaking down these barriers. Our mission is to make the creative industries accessible to all, equipping young people with the skills and confidence to pursue careers in film, media, and beyond.

Introducing Students to the Creative Sector

Recently, Rachel Wang, Chocolate Films co-Founder and Director visited Ark Academy in Wandsworth, where many students have limited digital access and little knowledge of how to enter creative fields. Through an engaging session, she introduced them to the wide range of opportunities within the industry and shared insights from her voluntary work with BAFTA and the National Portrait Gallery.

The aim of this visit was to help students take creative careers seriously, dispel common myths, and demonstrate that these roles are not out of reach.

Myth-Busting: What Careers Really Exist in the Creative Industries?

One of the biggest challenges young people face when considering creative careers is a lack of information. Rachel’s session tackled this head-on by discussing:

  • Roles lacking diversity and representation: Areas like cinematography and directing still struggle with inclusivity, but initiatives like Chocolate Films’ workshops help to change that.

  • Skills gaps in the industry: There is a high demand for professionals in animation, VFX, and post-production—fields that offer significant job opportunities.

  • Non-creative roles that power the industry: From project managers to sound technicians and marketing specialists, the creative sector thrives on a mix of artistic and logistical expertise.

The 1000 Londoners Challenge: Hands-On Filmmaking

A highlight of the session was the introduction of Chocolate Films’ flagship documentary series, 1000 Londoners. This award-winning project gives a voice to the diverse communities of London through short documentary films.

To put their learning into practice, Rachel challenged the students to create their own 1000 Londoners film featuring a family member. This encouraged them to think like filmmakers—considering storytelling, cinematography, and editing. By working on a personal story, students could see firsthand how filmmaking is a powerful and accessible way to share unique perspectives.

Key Skills for Success in the Creative Industry

Rachel wrapped up the session by reflecting on the essential skills needed to thrive in creative careers:

  • Collaboration: Whether on a film set or in an animation studio, teamwork is essential.
  • Problem-solving: Creativity is about overcoming challenges and finding innovative solutions.
  • Communication: Storytelling and media production rely on clear, compelling messaging.
  • Resilience: The industry is competitive, but persistence and adaptability lead to success.
